Nakara

Overview

Nakara is the odd one on this list, and the best-rated. It is a first-person arcade maze game: you are dropped into a labyrinth, the exit stays shut until you have picked up every Magic Ring in it, and things are hunting you the entire time you are looking.

The labyrinths come in different themes and they are endless in the sense that there is always another one, so the loop is a rhythm of learning layouts, panicking, and making a run for the last ring with something behind you. Random buffs shake up each attempt, and the survival element is less about fighting than about routing: knowing when to break line of sight and when to just sprint.

It caps off with a boss fight against Nakara itself. The presentation is pixel art in first person, which sounds like it should not work and absolutely does, and the developer states no generative AI was used anywhere in it. The free demo build is a 428 MB Windows download.

Story

Humans and monsters used to coexist. Then Nakara got into them, and they started dragging people into the Labyrinth. The goddess sent Ernest to find out why; Nakara beat him and took his power on the first meeting. Stuck inside with a mage named Victor, he starts looking for a way out.
