Overview

Apostate Verity is a side-scrolling souls-like set in a dark fantasy world, and the thing everyone notices first is the art. KitDa Games leans hard on handcrafted 2D work and the claim on the page is that this is the best-looking 2D action game in the adult space. It is a bold thing to say and the screenshots make it hard to argue with.

The combat is the other half. Precise, punishing, built around reading enemies rather than out-damaging them, with boss fights that are openly modeled on Dark Souls. Average session is listed as a few minutes, which tells you exactly what kind of game this is: you will be dying a lot, and each attempt is short.

The story follows Amara, leader of an Order devoted to the Twin Saints, sent after her own vice leader Verity after she vanishes. The framing is betrayal and doubt rather than heroism. The demo is a 118 MB Windows download, it also runs in the browser, it supports keyboard, Xbox controller and joystick across nine languages, and no generative AI was used.

Story

Verity, second in command of the Order, disappeared without explanation. The highest authority ordered a pursuit. Amara, who trusted her, is the one who has to do it.
